Coil Springs Explained

Jan 1, 2022 | Mattresses

You might have heard of the terms “coil-sprung” or “open coil” relating to mattresses, but what do they mean and do they mean the same thing?

What is an open coil mattress?

Coil springs or open coil units are often used in mattresses, as they can be mass-produced cost-effectively. However, coil springs are declining in popularity.

These mattresses consist of larger springs all linked together. Also known as Bonnell springs, there is no fabric around them, hence ‘open coil’. A double size would typically contain around 300 springs.

Fillings used tend to be fibre pads or standard foam, although more luxurious models could include a layer of memory foam or latex foam.

Are coil-sprung mattresses suitable for couples?

Coil-sprung mattresses transfer pressure and movement over the entire surface. This means there is less independent support so when one person turns over, the other feels it.

How comfortable are open coil mattresses?

Coil springs generally feel firmer than pocket springs with more bounce and some side-to-side movement. On the plus side, they are less expensive than pocket springs and much lighter to carry or turn.
