What is a Zip-and-Link Mattress?

Apr 1, 2025 | Mattresses

Just like in Goldilocks, we each have personal preferences when choosing how soft or firm we want our mattress. You may prefer a firm mattress if you sleep on your back, while your partner might opt for a softer sleeping surface. So, where do you go from here? A zip-and-link mattress may be the solution.

Zip-and-link beds allow couples with different firmness preferences to find a bed that suits them both. For example, one mattress could be soft and the other firm. These mattresses generally consist of two single or small single mattresses that zip together to create a king or super-king-size bed.

Benefits of a zip-and-link mattress

Zip-and-link beds make it much easier to rotate and flip your mattresses because they are individually smaller than a double, king, or super king mattress. They are ideal for most people, particularly elderly couples and those with mobility issues, or simply anyone who may struggle to lift and manoeuvre heavier mattresses.

Zip-and-link mattresses also work well in guest rooms, since you can separate them with a split base—you’ll often find them in hotels and B&Bs. As with any mattress, proper care will help you get the most out of zip-and-links and minimise any body impressions. If the mattresses are double-sided, unzip them first and turn (flip) each one individually. For single-sided mattresses, rotate each mattress 180 degrees, which becomes much easier when unzipped.

Sometimes, larger mattresses such as a king or super king can develop a ridge in the centre where neither user sleeps. This natural occurrence doesn’t happen with zip-and-link mattresses because they consist of two separate mattresses that you can rotate individually. Regularly rotating your mattress—whether zip-and-link or not—and flipping it if it is double-sided will help minimise body impressions.

Are there any disadvantages to a zip-and-link mattress?

You may notice a slight dip where the two mattresses zip together in the middle but this is generally very minimal. Using a mattress protector and undersheet will help to minimise the look and feel of this too.

How do zip-and-link mattresses compare in price to traditional mattresses?

You should expect to pay more for a zip-and-link mattress compared to its standard king or super king counterpart. This is because of the additional craftsmanship and materials (like zips) required to produce zip-and-link mattresses.

Where can I buy a zip-and-link mattress?

Always buy from a reputable bed retailer. Use our Product Finder tool to find a list of National Bed Federation-approved bed brands that make zip-and-link mattresses. Now the two of you can sleep soundly every night.
