If you’ve just unwrapped a new mattress and noticed a strong smell, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions we hear is: “My new mattress has a strong odour – is it harmful, and will it go away?”
The short answer? It’s normal, not harmful, and it will disappear.
Why Does My New Mattress Smell?
Some new mattresses – especially those that arrive vacuum-packed, rolled, or contain foam – can release a noticeable odour when first opened. It also happens with other new household items such as carpets, curtains and upholstered furniture.
The difference is that you spend around eight hours with your face fairly close to your mattress, so you’re more likely to notice the smell.
Is the Odour Harmful?
No. The smell comes from chemicals used during the foam manufacturing process. These were sealed in the packaging and only become noticeable once the mattress is unwrapped and reacts with fresh air.
While the odour may be unpleasant at first, it isn’t harmful to your health. It will naturally fade, usually within a few days, but in some cases it can take up to a week to fully disappear. If it’s taking longer, contact the company from which you bought your new mattress for advice.
How to Speed Up the Process
Here are a few easy ways to help the new mattress smell disperse more quickly:
1. Air the bedroom well
Open windows during the day to increase airflow. Fresh air helps the odour escape faster.
2. Let the mattress breathe
If possible, leave bedding off for the first few hours after unwrapping it. Giving the mattress space to ventilate works wonders.
3. Use a fabric-safe odour spray
A light mist on the surface can help neutralise odours while you wait.
4. Try the baking soda trick
Place a few bowls of water mixed with baking soda around the room. They will help absorb and neutralise lingering smells.
