Who doesn’t love a bargain? Whether you’re browsing online or strolling down the high street, the big red “SALE” signs can be tempting, especially if your bed is showing its age (over 7–8 years). But before you jump into the sales frenzy, it’s essential to ensure you’re getting the right bed from a reputable seller.
Here’s a handy guide to help you navigate your way to a great deal without compromising on quality or comfort.
Bed buying tips:
- Be aware of dodgy dealers: While most UK bed manufacturers offer safe and quality products, some unscrupulous sellers might try to lure you with prices that seem too good to be true. Keep an eye out for inferior products passed off as high-end luxury or, worse, unsafe and unhygienic mattresses. See how to spot these scams by watching our video on mattress scams.
- Plan ahead: Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed by choices in the store or online. Think about what you need from your bed. Is price your only priority, or are factors like storage, easy access to your bedroom, or mattress turning equally important? Consider if you have specific health needs, like pressure relief for a shoulder or hip problem. Having a clear idea will make the decision easier when facing endless sale options.
- Spend as much as you can afford: Use the sale to your advantage. Rather than settling for the bed that you could have bought at full price, consider upgrading to a more luxurious model. After all, your bed is something you use 7–8 hours a day, every day, for years. It’s worth the investment in quality and comfort.
- Look for the NBF-approved logo: Bargain or not you still want a bed that’s safe, clean and is what it says it is. NBF-approved manufacturers have all passed rigorous checks to ensure they meet flammability, cleanliness and trade description regulations among other things.
- Find trusted retailers: To make your shopping easier, we’ve put together a list of bed retailers who predominantly stock beds and mattresses made by NBF-approved brands. Use our handy store locator tool to find your nearest NBF Retail Champion for peace of mind.
- Take your time: Sale periods can often be hectic, but don’t let the rush dictate your decision. Make it a special trip – one where you’re not in a rush, tired, emotional or harassed. Take your time testing out beds, lie down in your usual sleeping position, and give it at least 10 minutes to see if it feels right.
- Consider a bigger: Take advantage of any offers to trade up a size at no extra cost. A roomy king-sized or super king-sized bed provides more space, reducing partner disturbance during the night. In comparison, a standard double, (only 4’6” wide) gives each user about as much room as a child has in their cot!
- Don’t pay for features you don’t need: Divan drawers or ottoman bases are great for extra storage, but they often add over £100 to the price. If you don’t need the storage, consider putting that money towards a superior mattress. Similarly, don’t pay for extra features unless they offer real value to you.
- Shop together if you’re buying a bed for you and your partner. Comfort is so subjective and even though you may think you know your partner very well, it is risky trying to guess what will suit their individual needs.
- Take your pillow: If you’re planning to keep your pillow, take it with you when trying out beds. (unless you intend to buy a new pillow at the same time). Your pillow plays a critical role in achieving the right sleeping posture and using a different one in-store could give you a false impression of how the bed feels.
- Tips for buying beds online: If you’re shopping online, be sure to check independent reviews for both the product and the seller. Look out for delivery costs and returns policies, which can vary between online retailers. Make sure you know the terms and conditions before you click “buy.” Watch our video for more tips on buying beds online.
