Santa’s Secret Bedtime Routine: How to Unwind at Christmas

Dec 16, 2024 | Sleep & Wellbeing

The holiday season is upon us, and even Father Christmas can feel the strain of late-night parties, indulgent treats, and endless to-do lists. Before the big night, even the jolly old man himself needs to unwind at Christmas. So, how does Santa Claus prepare for a restful night? Here’s how we imagine his perfect bedtime routine… What would you add? Let us know in the comments!

8 Steps in Santa’s Sleep Routine

  • Blocks out the North Star’s glow. Living so close to it has its perks, but it can be a bit too bright for Santa’s liking! Blackout curtains (especially with thermal lining) not only block out light but keep the room insulated.
  • Keeps his room at the perfect Arctic chill. The North Pole makes it easy, but old Saint Nick makes sure his bedroom stays between 16-18°C.
  • Swaps his 50th cup of cocoa for a cup of magical herbal tea. As much as he loves his caffeine and sugar, Santa knows this will only keep him from catching those much-needed Zzzs before the Big Night. A calming tea such as chamomile or peppermint instead is perfect.
  • Checks his big bed is still comfortable and supportive. Santa needs a bed large enough for both him and Mrs Claus to enjoy a good night’s sleep without disturbing each other. Wherever you are in the world, a comfy, spacious bed can make all the difference! Check out tips for buying a new bed.
  • Goes tech-free at least an hour before bed. Even Santa is up to date with the latest tech and knows when to switch his digital navigation device to ‘Do Not Disturb’.
  • He and Mrs Claus read a festive bedtime story. What better way to unwind than reading about a jolly old man who circumnavigates the world in one night?
  • Writes in his journal. Jotting down his thoughts and feelings, whether they are worries or a to-do list ahead of the big day, can be very therapeutic. Happy thoughts promote happy relaxed dreams.
  • Uses noise-cancelling ear muff. With hundreds of elves singing around the clock, Santa’s fluffy ear muffs ensure some much-needed peace and quiet. Elves emit a lot of noise for their size!
